Stoke City announced the signing of Inter Milan winger Xherdan Shaqiri to a five-year contract for a club-record £12million transfer fee and could be available as early as this weekend against Spurs as he joins the Potters in training this week.
“He’s a dynamic and explosive player who will bring something different to the group and at the age of 23 he still has a great deal of potential," manager Mark Hughes told the club website on Tuesday. "In the chats I’ve had with him it’s obvious that he’s excited about playing in the Premier League and showing what he’s capable of.”
Shaqiri was on hand at the Britannia Stadium to watch the club's 1-0 loss to Liverpool on Sunday in a strange turn of events after rejecting a move to Stoke just earlier this month. However, a proposed move to Schalke broke down, paving the way for the Swiss international's decision to join the Potters.
“It’s no secret that we have been pursuing Xherdan for some time now and we are delighted to have finally secured his signature," chief executive Mark Scholes said. "He’s an exciting young player who is really looking forward to playing in the Premier League having played at the very highest level in Germany with Bayern Munich and in Italy with Inter."
